about

You said

//You said come to the edge. We can’t we said, we’re scared. Come to the edge you said. We came, you pushed us. We flew.//

What do you do with a whole bunch of music that was never written to tour or sell? The world already has over 37 million songs to buy, who needs more?

The answer is that music is more than a market. It’s who we are. It’s cave painting in Maros. It’s a selfie on a stick. It’s the human need to leave our own mark, to celebrate our own journey.

The most important music is the music you make for yourself.

The songs on this album come from a cave full of stuff written over the years and played together in crowded kitchen concerts where guitars are everywhere and everyone knows the chords.

Sometimes a key turns and all the tumblers fall into place. Harry started taking the music seriously. Dave came along at the right time. Songs turned into records. Tumbler is the result.

The musical leap involved has brought new recognition, like seeing old friends in new clothes. Listening to the album still makes me laugh. I’m grateful to those who pushed.

You complete the circle. Thank you for listening, may your music celebrate your journey too.

//The opening quote borrows from Brandon Bays ‘The Journey’, a book we should probably read sometime.

The paintings at Maros in Indonesia are coloured outlines made by carefully blowing paint around hands pressed against cave walls and ceilings. They are about 40,000 years old.

“All music is folk music. I ain’t never heard no horse sing a song.” We like what Louis Armstrong said about genre (or possibly Big Bill Broonzy, who may have said it first).//

Track Name: Moments (she reappears)
Seconds minutes hours days weeks months turn into years
Fade into black just disappear
Then out of nowhere something like this
She reappears as close as a kiss

Something enigmatical magical deep in her smile
Says forget twenty years it’s only a while
Come let’s dance to the steps of a tune
As old as a child as young as the moon

Well I know all there is to know
About watching moments come and go
Yes I know all there is to know
About watching moments come come and go

Navigating cautiously recklessly inch at a time
He tears up the map carefully reading the signs
Head shot through with twenty years of mistakes
It’s time to follow the heart with a foot on the brakes

Well I know all there is to know
About watching moments come and go
And I know all there is to know
About watching moments come come and go
Well I know all there is to know
About watching moments come and go
Yes I know all there is to know
About watching moments come come and go
Track Name: Don't think twice (she says)
I ain’t got a penny
I’m mixed up and messy
It makes me prone to worry
She says that’s alright
Don’t you worry honey
You’re loving you’re funny
And all I want to do is be with you tonight

Don’t think once
Don’t think twice
My advice if this feels nice

I don’t really bother
To look in the mirror
But now that I love her
Well I feel I should
It ain’t very pretty is the real nitty gritty
But she looks at me and says
You’re looking good

Don’t think once
Don’t think twice
My advice if this feels nice
Don’t think twice

I long for perfection
To win her affection
A little education
Wouldn’t come amiss
But when we’re together
It doesn’t seem to matter
We can say so much
With a single kiss

Don’t think once
Don’t think twice
My advice if this feels nice

Don’t think once
Don’t think twice
My advice if this feels nice
Don’t think twice

Don’t think twice
Track Name: London girl
My London girl I’ll say it clear
She don’t eat burgers she don’t drink beer
She don’t come bowling don’t like my smoking
And when I’m snoring she moves elsewhere
My London girl despite it all
Believes we’re still compatible
And as for me emphatically
I think she’s beautiful

My London girl she loves the Queen
High toffs and Tories that kind of thing
And art and culture and the soaps besides
And fancy vegetables that ain’t been fried
My London girl likes different stuff
But still believes we’re good enough
And as for me why disagree?
I think she’s beautiful

My London girl like Tuesday’s child
Is full of grace and class and style
She’s good with flowers and with people too
She makes them smile yeah she makes them bloom
My London girl in honesty
Could do much better than one like me
I don’t know why but in her eyes
She thinks I’m beautiful

My London girl just one more thing
She’s musical so when I sing
It hurts her ears still she lets me be
And did I mention she cooks for me?
My London girl for all the world
You’d have to say is wonderful
And as for me emphatically
I think she’s beautiful
I think for me she’ll always be
Like London beautiful
Track Name: Businessman blues
You’ve got to be big you’ve got to be cool as ice
Got to be sharp you’ve got to do nasty got to do nice
Lord knows yeah lord knows it ain’t easy to survive
Yeah you know it I know it you’ve got to be big

You’ve got to have means for when the deal goes down
Got to have pull you’ve got to know your way around
Lord knows yeah lord knows it ain’t easy staying alive
You know it yeah I know it you’ve got to have means

Lord knows to get to stay on top in business
Lord knows you can’t afford to show no weakness got to be big

You’ve got to keep tight you’ve got to squeeze the bills
Watch the crew and keep your arms around the till
Lord knows it’s a big mean tight kind of jive
You know it yeah I know it you’ve got to keep tight

Lord knows to get to stay on top in business
Lord knows you can’t afford to show no weakness got to be big

Lord knows to get to stay on top in business
Lord knows you can’t afford to show no weakness
Yeah you’ve got to got to be big
Track Name: Sleepy bananas are cool
Hey little face you don’t know nothing
You’re hanging on tight like a fool
When all round the world everyone knows
Just letting go is the rule
And if you were wise you’d know by now
Sleepy bananas are cool

Nothing’s for keeps and everything goes
Whether it’s kind or it’s cruel
Don’t try to fight it you never will win
Sleepy bananas are cool

Hey little face wasn’t today great
Like stealing a day out of school
And I’m just like you I don’t want to lose it
Like hanging on tight to a jewel
But if we were wise we’d know by now
Sleepy bananas are cool

Nothing’s for keeps and everything goes
Whether it’s kind or it’s cruel
Don’t try to fight it we never will win
Sleepy bananas are cool
Track Name: Dennis and Jean
Put your hat on in the sun
Put your hat on in the sun
Old love has its own way
To say I love you precious one

Sixty years is quite a time
To share each day to share a life
The story begins not long after the war
She’s there alone he’s helping out on the door

And would you like to sit with me? We can both share the score
Haydn’s the Seasons, you’ll enjoy it all the more
Then maybe I could walk you all the way home
A kid of thirty and a girl of twenty-one

Play for me Jean play Beethoven and Brahms
Let’s marry and we need never be apart

A brand new house a baby girl
Sunshine and wonder and music fill the world
Cut to a garden sixty years all flown…

Put your hat on in the sun
Put your hat on in the sun
A kid of ninety a kid of ninety
And a girl of eighty-one
The wind blows and everything feels gone
Believe in love, love goes on

Love goes on Jean play Granados and Gershwin
I’ll find you as soon as the piano starts to sing
I’ll find you we’ll be together again

Sixty years a blink in time
Put your hat on rain or shine
Keep faith with the story and you will never be alone
We walk with angels till the angels bring us home

Play for me Jean play Debussy Clair de Lune
We’ll sleep holding hands the way we always do
Tomorrow a canvas all new

Play for me Jean and Popsy you too
We’ll sing and play together the way we always do
And never need to say I love you

Play for me Jean and Popsy you too
We’ll sing and play together the way we always do
Tomorrow a canvas all new
Track Name: Bueller
You said I’m filling you up like I was running a bath and broken the tap
And it’s pouring in over porcelain skin
And my orange tiger stripes give me 180 lines
Mix on my cleftal palette
I’m sitting here on your patio
Cracked mosaic stones
Talking about lovers from not long ago to one we’re yet to know
And it’s warm and inviting the sun begins smiling
Yours tries to hide behind semi-shut eyelids
You move closer now and I turn around
Feel that the sunlight has burst through the clouds
And I am five years old just for a little while
Before I go
Don’t go

You’re interrupted by a text in your hand from a boy on your mind
And a universe putting U ‘n’ I first
And if the butterflies come as a surprise it just means they’re worth it
And sprinting for a train I thought would take me back to mine
Not knowing the place I’d go would be by home
Just two weeks down the line
And if I hadn’t sprinted or waited five minutes
Or once in my life thought to purchase a ticket
Or checked its direction when switching platforms
Picked up my things from one train to the next one
Then I’d probably just have gone home
And you’d have watched Bueller alone
I could never say
That I
Well I overflow when you look into my eyes
And say hello
Don’t go
Track Name: Break or fall
And the sun can walk beside us if it means to stay
Miss Tiger’s in the garden getting high off some croquet
And we can dress in black pretending to be ninjas
Or find some old pine tree to climb and talk between the branches

Break or fall
Win it all
Though it’s dark I can still read you
A whole romance shared through held hands
Don’t let the blinding lights deceive you
So we can appreciate
Yeah we can appreciate

And every child is watching the moon’s kaleidoscope
Come steal a glance straight through a glass of Malibu and coke
And though I may be smiling my tongue is sort of cold
But we made plans to shake worn hands of a father growing old

Break or fall
Win it all
Though it’s dark I can still read you
A whole romance shared through held hands
Don’t let the blinding lights deceive you
Break or fall
Win it all
Though it’s dark I can still read you
A whole romance shared through held hands
Don’t let the blinding lights deceive you
So we can appreciate
Yeah we can appreciate
And I don’t want to go home
No I don’t want to go alone
No I don’t want to go home
No I don’t want to go alone

No I don’t want to go back home
‘Cos I’m already gone
Track Name: Call me sentimental
Call me sentimental
Call me anything you choose
But when you look at me so gentle
I just melt into my shoes
Linen on the table
Couples dancing on the floor
Well if this is love my darling
Let us dance a little more

And taking your arms in mine
In perfect rhythm and perfect rhyme
Let’s dance together till the end of time
Tonight and ever more

Life is full of troubles
Yes and sometimes full of tears
But then champagne is full of bubbles
Tasting better with the years
So here’s a toast my darling
To the moon and stars above
To the years that lie before us
To the lady that I love

And taking your arms in mine
In perfect rhythm and perfect rhyme
Let’s dance together till the end of time
Tonight and ever more

And holding you close to me
In perfect pitch perfect harmony
Let’s dance together through whate’er may be
My love for ever more

Linen on the table
Couples dancing on the floor
Well if this is love my darling
Let us dance a little more
Track Name: Dead man's bones
I’m just a dead man’s bones
Cold as ice and cold as stones
The coroner’s trying to find out why
A decent soul like me should die

Roll me over again
I got nothing to lose I got nothing to gain
I said roll me over and over again

Lying dead in the city morgue
I’m so much mutton I‘m so much pork
All through life men picked my brains
Now I’m dead they’re just the same

Roll me over again etc.

Now the coroner’s coming close
With a long steel spoon to pick my nose
Why should I grumble why should I moan
When all through life I had to pick my own?

Roll me over again etc.

Now they’ve cut off half my hair
To see if there’s some arsenic there
I ate home cooking right through my life
So they sure as hell don’t trust my wife

Roll me over again etc.

No longer in the pink
They keep me cold so I don’t stink
They couldn’t find out why I dropped down dead
So they dropped me in a hole in the ground instead

Roll me over again etc.
Track Name: Flowers and miracles
I will bring you flowers in the morning
I will come to you through the rainstorm
Who cares about the words when you’re walking
Up and down trying to get a bleeding kid to stop bawling

Lord are you friends are you friends with me?
Lord are you friends with me?
I could not be sure of your love at all
Walking up and down till half past three
Lord why do miracles have to be so noisy?

Joe came along then Jim came along then Tom came along
Then Matt came along then Harry came along then Ben came along
Walking up and down singing flowers in the morning
Half a bleeding life trying to get a bleeding kid to stop bawling

Lord are you friends are you friends with me?
Oh Lord are you friends with me?
I could not be sure of your love at all
Till they went to sleep at half past three
Lord why do miracles have to be so noisy?

Liz came along and Joe was a goner then Loz came along
Then Tash came along and a little while later Sadie
Then Bob came along and Jim was a goner then Cos and Erasmia
Sas came along and Tom was a goner that’s just so far

Lord are you friends are you friends with me?
I know that you’re friends with me
I just need to look around at all the love in the world
At all these bleeding kids and now DG
Who cares if miracles need to be noisy?
Track Name: Rowan tree
Rowan tree red and gold
Autumn’s story softly told
Those we love those we grieve
Falling falling leaves

All our memories
Gentle deities
Hold us safe in your arms

Spring unfolding far away
Southern Cross Santa Fe
Hearts and seasons intertwine
Arm in arm in time

All our memories
Gentle deities
Hold us safe in your arms

Ancient stones olive trees
The garden of Gethsemane
Rock the cradle let it go
Watch the children grow

All our memories
Gentle deities
Hold us safe in your arms

All my memories
Gentle deities
Oh hold me safe in your arms
